Tunnel catenary

The overhead line in the tunnel: a low tunnel mast or a ceiling suspension holding one thick contact wire from above, with nothing under it where the pantograph runs. Screwed down, for H0, TT, N and Z, with your name and TRAX engraved on the back. It also fits in a helix, where the line climbs between the plates. It goes with every overhead-line system and is sold separately.

The film goes here: TRAX hangs the line over a station, then a print in the hand.

Printing tips

The same tips come with the plugin in WAZO3D.

  • Print in resin: the bars, insulators and slots are too fine for filament in H0 and N. A tough (ABS-like) resin breaks less easily.
  • Straight on the build plate, upright as the STL stands, without supports or a raft: the foot is made to lie flat.
  • Elephant’s foot: the first layers spread out. Use fewer and shorter bottom layers, or your slicer’s elephant-foot compensation; otherwise file the lower edge off.
  • Glue with resin: a drop of the same resin on the wire in its slot, cured with a UV torch, holds and fills; superglue works too.
  • Wash briefly in IPA and cure no longer than needed: thin parts go soft when soaked and brittle when over-cured.
  • TRAX and your name are on the back.
  • Tunnel mast and ceiling suspension: fix them with small screws through the foot’s holes after curing; ream a hole with a 2.2 mm drill if it came out tight.

How it works

  1. 1

    Lay the line in TRAX

Mark your tracks as electrified: TRAX puts the masts, portals and tensioners where they belong, by the system you choose. Free, like everything in the editor.

  2. 2

    Generate in WAZO3D

The plugin turns that placement into printable parts: every portal made to fit its tracks, the wire lengths and the counts.

  3. 3

    Print and bend

Print the masts on your own printer, bend the contact wire on the jig and put the line up on the layout.

The working drawing in the TRAX building plan

With the TRAX building plan your overhead line comes with a detailed working drawing: where every mast goes, and how the contact wires are hung.
